With a population of over 141 million, Java is the most populous island in the world and home to some of the most breath-taking locations our eyes have ever seen. During our trip through this beautiful Indonesian island, we saw active volcanoes in mid-eruption, an amazing waterfall and the world’s largest acid lake which is located inside the Ijen Crater.
Our pictures and story have recently been featured in award-winning online magazine iGNANT.
In January, we spent two weeks in Bali and while we were there we decided to join a three-day trip to the neighbour island Java. We didn't know a lot about Indonesia, so we simply would not have been able to visit Java without Indotravelteam, a team of people who organize extreme and unusual trips to this incredible island. We do not like tours in general, because we normally always travel on our own, but we heard about these guys and how good they were. It would have been a hassle to organize such an extreme trip and we knew that they were more of adventure team rather than just a tour, so we decided to go for it and we were not disappointed! A special thanks goes to our experienced and cheerful guide Pierrick, which amused us not only with his funny stories during the whole trip, but with his French accent. He listened and communicated with us with such an open mind and heart. Despite the fact that our tour was not always so comfortable, and sometimes hard and dangerous, it was worth it! I hope our pictures will show you the power of nature and the beauty which surrounded us in Java!
It took a while until we finally got to the island, it was a long way along the coast of Bali. After driving for many hours it was time to get a ferry and once we arrived, it was on the road part II. Java is not a touristic island at all, there are no hotels or restaurants. You must expect that the choice of food will not be what you are used to. In the late afternoon we arrived to a small town located close to the Bromo Volcano. Bromo stands as one of the most active volcanoes in the world. We could not believe that just a couple of kilometers away from us there was an erupting volcano - which we could see and hear!
After admiring this wonder of nature, we went for dinner and then straight to bed as we were getting up a few hours later! To be able to see the sunrise and the volcanoes even closer, we had to climb to the viewpoint at night. Unfortunately, the weather that day wasn't so good and we barely saw the sunrise. Still we enjoyed the amazing views and that special and unique moment!

Пока я собиралась написать пост о нашей трехдневной поездке на остров Ява, берлинский онлайн-журнал iGNANT уже успел опубликовать целую серию наших фотографий оттуда.
Немного о самом путешествии... В январе, находясь на Бали, мы решили выбрать три дня для небольшого путешествия на соседний остров Ява. Не зная практически ничего об острове и о самой Индонезии, мы бы просто не обошлись без команды Indotravelteam, которая занимается организацией экстремальных и необычных путешествий на этот остров. Должна сказать, что мы c Маурисио не любим экскурсии и всегда путешествуем сами, но узнав, что с этими ребятами мы сможем не терять время на организацию такой немного экстремальной поездки и что это совсем не экскурсия по острову, а настоящее приключение - мы очень обрадовались. Отдельное спасибо нашему опытному и веселому гиду Pierrick, который веселил нас всю поездку не только смешными историями, но и своим французским акцентом. Слушать и общаться с таким простым и открытым человеком сплошное удовольствие. Несмотря на то, что наше путешествие местами было не очень комфортным, а иногда даже сложным, это того стоило! Надеюсь наши фотографии помогут хоть немного передать мощь, силу и ту красоту природы, которая нас окружала!
Дорога заняла много времени: сначала долгий путь вдоль красивейших мест Бали, потом паром и опять дорога, но уже по совсем не туристическому острову Ява, где практически нет отелей и тем более ресторанов. Нужно было расчитывать, что большого выбора еды здесь не будет. Подъехали к вулкану Бромо мы только ближе к вечеру, когда уже темнело. Мы не могли поверить своим глазам, что перед нами, всего в пару километров, вот он - извергающийся вулкан, который мы видим и слышим!
Полюбовавшись этой красотой, мы пошли ужинать и потом сразу спать, потому что вставать надо было уже через пару часов. Для того, чтобы встретить рассвет с видом на вулканы, нужно было подниматься на смотровую площадку ночью. К сожалению, с погодой нам в этот день не очень повезло и рассвета мы почти не увидели, но, несмотря на это, мы смогли насладится картиной, которая открылась перед нами.
Still amazed by what we had seen, we continued our trip to explore the beautiful Madakaripura waterfall. One must first climb an array of cliffs before encountering this incredible gift from nature. It was some kind of fairy tale - fresh bright green everywhere and you heard only the water which run down the slopes. It was impossible to approach the waterfall to not soaked up until the strings, we were right under the direct water jets. In such cases it is very useful to care a special waterproof bag for your camera. All the details about what we needed to prepare for the trip we got from Indotravelteam. This is the biggest and most amazing waterfall we had ever seen! Standing there so small, wet and frozen in such an environment with the incredibly powerful and captivating nature all around us.
By the way, it was very difficult to take pictures there. First, when you're that wet you feel really cold, secondly the waterfall does not fit into the frame, because it's so big and the third thing is that you have to be sure to mind your steps, because there are no normal roads and it is very slippery. At the same time it was hard to leave this place as we felt so good there! It was really magical!
Под впечатлением мы продолжили наше путешествие в сторону водопада Madakaripura. Подъезжая к нему постепенно оказываешься в какой-то сказке - вокруг свежая яркая зелень и только слышно, как вода бежит по склонам. К водопаду невозможно подойти не промокнув до нитки, мы проходили прямо под прямыми струями воды. Здесь нам очень пригодился специальный водонепроницаемый пакет для фотоаппаратов. (Всю подробную информацию, что нужно обязательно иметь при себе, мы получили от Indotravelteam) Мы даже не догадывались какая картинка откроется перед нами. Это наверное самый высокий водопад, который я когда-либо видела! Стоишь такой вот маленький, мокрый и замерзший в окружении этой неимоверно мощной и завораживающей природной силы.
Было очень-очень сложно фотографировать. Во-первых, когда уже мокрый насквозь - становится холодно, во-вторых водопад просто не влезал в кадры, в-третьих нужно было обязательно смотреть под ноги, потому что там нет нормальной дороги - очень скользко. А еще из-за потока воды с 200 метровой высоты появлялось миллион брызг и буквально за считанные секунды все фотоаппараты были мокрыми. Уходить все равно не хотелось, не так часто получается оставаться наедине с дикой природой.
On our last night, our heads hardly touched our pillows before we were off to our next adventure. The steep hill to the crater would have been a tough one to climb in broad daylight, let alone through the pitch-black night. Indotravelteam provided us with headlamps, as we needed to have our hands free to be able to carefully go all the way down the Crater through the rocks. Once we were half way there, we were instructed to wear protective masks due to the strong sulphur gas that came from inside the crater itself. The way down was even harder, the path was narrow and slippery. I will never forget the smell of sulfur when you're covering in a cloud of sulfur smoke, the eyes begin to tear and breathing becomes difficult. The main thing is not to panic, continue to breathe calmly, sit down and wait until this cloud is gone or wait until your guide Pierrick save you (what he did in this situation with us).
Once the sun rose, the real magic emerged, in the form of the most beautiful scene we had ever set eyes on. The most magnificent thing was to see the the world’s largest acid lake with all its different contrasting colors. The ever-changing different blue and green tones were simply mesmerizing.
About local workers who work in the crater of the volcano, we could write a whole essay. These jobs belong to the most dangerous jobs in the world. They work without any protective clothing and often even without a mask. There are two types of workers - the ones who collect the sulphur right beside the toxic gas and the workers who carry the huge pieces of sulphur all the way up and out of the crater. They carry the pieces inside baskets and over their shoulders, and these baskets can which weigh between 60 and 90 kg.
They are paid very little money for risky and dangerous job. It makes you feel sad when you find out about the work conditions of these people, but what really surprised us was to see how friendly and kind they were despite their situation. On our way back up we encountered many workers and all of them said "Good Morning" and had a smile across their face. This is the kind of situation that helps you put things into perspective and can help you appreciate everything that you have and walk though with your own big smile!
I hope that you can at least get a bit of the atmosphere of the different magical places we visited!
Мокрые и уставшие, но под впечатлением мы вернулись назад и поехали в сторону вулкана Иджен. Спать легли рано, ведь подъем на вулкан был уже в 11 часов вечера! Это было непросто, наверное не каждый может туда подняться. Где-то в два часа ночи мы в респираторах спускались в кратер вулкана Иджен. По-моему, самое неприятное и опасное здесь - это сернистый газ, который с каждым порывом ветра менял свое направление. Спускаться в кратер без маски и респиратора очень опасно! Мне кажется я никогда не забуду этот запах, когда тебя накрывает облако серного дыма, глаза начинают слезится и дышать становится сложно. Главное не паниковать, продолжать дышать спокойно, присесть и ждать пока рассеется это облако над тобой или ждать пока тебя прийдет и спасет гид Pierrick (что он и делал в такой ситуации).
Но все это ничто, по сравнению с тем, что мы увидели, когда начало светать! Наконец-то мы могли посмотреть откуда и как мы спускались, оглянуться вокруг и увидеть какой-то неземной ландшафт, неимоверные яркие цвета и, конечно, рассвет у самого большого кислотного озера в мире!
Про местных рабочих, которые добывают в кратере вулкана серу, можно писать целое сочинение. Эта работа относится к самым опасным в мире. Без каких-либо защитных костюмов и часто даже без респиратора они работают прямо у самого кратера вулкана, а потом несут на себе корзины с огромными кусками серы на плечах, которые весят от 60 до 90 кг, и поднимаются с этой ношей наверх - на вершину кратера. Получают за свой труд они, к сожалению, копейки, но, несмотря на такую работу, многие из них видя туристов говорят "доброе утро" с улыбкой! Прекрасное напоминание для нас, что нужно ценить то, что имеешь и, конечно же, чаще улыбаться!
Три дня почти без сна и без интернета, но все это того стоило. Я очень надеюсь, что у нас получилось хоть немножко передать атмосферу этих волшебных мест!
