If six months ago, someone would have asked me about what I knew about Seoul, I probably wouldn't have had a lot to answer. Now, after having lived there for almost half a year, I can say that this is a big modern city, close to the sea and surrounded by hills. It's a metropolis with magnificent palaces, modern architecture and skyscrapers, busy streets, green rooftops, very cozy and modern cafes, Plastic surgery clinics and helpful, generous and very friendly people! In this city, in comparison to other large cities, you barely see tourists anywhere.
I moved there due to my photography studies. Many of you know that I study photography in Berlin and when I heard about the possibility of studying abroad, without hesitating for not even a second, I applied for an exchange semester in South Korea. I had never wanted to visit this country and had never really thought about how it would be to visit or live in Korea and in a big city like Seoul, but the idea of studying and living in a foreign country completely unknown to me seemed very attractive. Now I will briefly try to tell about my personal experience and about the things I will always remember about my time living there.
I can definitely say that it was not love at first sight. It took me about three weeks to get accustomed to the city and realize where I actually was and this would be the place where I was going to live and study. Everything there is very different to what I was used to, being the Korean language one of the most challenging things. Most of the people there hardly spoke english, so communication was an issue already since day one, but every time I went out to explore the streets, and saw their smiles towards me and the happy vibe around them, it all started to grow on me. Finding and discovering new people and new places, I slowly began to fall in love with this city more and more everyday, up to a point that I could not see myself leaving after the semester was over.
I have never met so many friendly, cute, kind and generous people anywhere else, I will really miss Koreans and their kind smiles. I was always very lucky with the people that I encountered. I often got things for free when buying something at the market or in a cafe. I would get an extra ice cream scoop at one of my favorite cafes in the city, or an orange after ordering a delicious smoothie, and often would get extra vegetables and fruits when buying in the market. I was able to see generosity almost everywhere I went, and if I was not given anything to eat or anything material I was given the best thing you can get from another human being, a sincere and honest smile which would accompany me though out the day.
I can definitely say that Koreans dress tastefully and have a lot of style! To me, South Korea and fashion are two words which are very close to each other. It was interesting to watch the local couples. For those of you who follow me on Snapchat (oljaryz) you probably know what I am talking about. It was so cute to see Korean couples dressed up with the same outfit: jumper, jacket, shoes and sometimes even pants. It was very nice to watch young couples holding hands and wearing the same jumper with the same color or a Mickey Mouse image on them. When thus happens, you feel like your in some kind of Korean movie and as a spectator, you just smile throughout the whole scene.
In Seoul it is almost impossible to find trash bins anywhere on the streets (I would walk for hours with an empty cup of tea and not know what to do with it) I would eventually give up searching and end up using my own bin once I got home. This would never happen in Europe as you can find trash bins everywhere. One thing I thought was great about Seoul, in contrast to Europe, is that you can find free clean toilets everywhere. In the metro stations and also while walking around the city.
I was lucky to have been able to have a little bit of summer, some fall and a tiny bit of winter during my time in Seoul. I would say that summer is not the best time to visit Korea due to the rain and the high humid temperatures, but autumn and winter will give you sunny and bright long days. This is one of the reasons why I fell in love with Seoul and something that I really will miss once I am back in Berlin, where winter barely has light and days are really short.
Seoul - the city of plastic surgery. No matter where you are (especially in the area of Gangnam - in the subway or on the street, you do not necessarily see a poster calling for a more slender figure, the correction of the face, nose, etc. The operation to adjust the shape of the eye - one of the most popular in the South Korea. So, if suddenly on the street meet a girl with a black eye and a swollen face, it is not because it someone has wronged (Korea, by the way, is considered one of the safest countries in the world), but because it is quite normal to meet people taped after surgery to his nose and swollen face on the street or in a shop. Beauty shops and stores of cosmetics just around every corner, so many I have never seen anywhere.
Korea - a country of meat and street food. For those who eat meat - it's paradise, but for vegetarians, or even worse, for Vegans, it will not be easy. To find a simple green salad in a restaurant or cafe is almost impossible, as it is, to find a vegetarian menu or meal. Although it's not really that surprising, as the prices of fruits and vegetables are very expensive. When you live there and go to the store almost every day, you notice this more than ever. It's definitely not Thailand, where you can find cheap and tasty fruits or vegetables everywhere. In South Korea, buying fruits and vegetables is a bit of a luxury.
I could tell you so much more about this city, but the main things that I wanted to share with you, have been mentioned already. During my stay in Seoul, I did a few blog posts about some of the places I visited, like my visit to the beautiful and oldest botanical garden in Seoul, my visit to the Plateau exhibition and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and a post about the day I spent visiting Muuido Island. Every city is beautiful in its own way and I will always miss and think about Seoul. Such an incredible experience needs to be remembered and shared, so others can also get a feeling for the atmosphere of this incredible city, a city with many contrasts, beautiful sunsets and endless beauty!
Если бы меня кто-то спросил полгода назад, что я знаю о Сеуле, то наверное ничего путного в ответ не услышал бы. Сейчас, после того, как я прожила в этом городе почти 5 месяцев, могу немного о нем рассказать. Это большой современный город-мегаполис, раскинувшийся у моря и окруженный холмами. Это город великолепных дворцов, небоскребов, современной архитектуры и чудесных корейских улочек, зеленых крыш, красивых и современных кафе, клиник пластической хирургии и... отзывчивых, очень дружелюбных и щедрых людей! Город, в котором по сравнению с другими большими городами мира, на удивление, редко встретишь туристов и несмотря на то, что в Сеуле проживает более 10 миллионов человек, этого совсем не чувствуется, пока не поднимешься на смотровую площадку и вспомнишь насколько же он все-таки огромный.
Приехала я сюда жить по учебе. Многие из вас знают, что я учусь на факультете фотографии в Берлине. Когда я узнала о возможности обучения полгода на факультете фотографии в другой стране, не долго думая подала документы на обучение именно в Корее, а не в Канаде или Европе. По одной простой причине: с Азией я знакома меньше всего. Пусть я никогда не мечтала сюда попасть и никогда особо не задумывалась, как это там в Корее, как это жить в таком огромном городе как Сеул, но мысль о том, что ты будешь учится и жить в совсем неизведанной и такой незнакомой стране, мне показалась очень привлекательной. Постараюсь сейчас кратко рассказать о своих впечатлениях и о том, что мне особенно запомнилось за эти месяцы.
Переехав в Сеул я точно могу сказать, что это была любовь не с первого взгляда. Мне понадобилось наверное около трех недель, чтобы привыкнуть к этому городу и осознать, что я тут буду жить и учиться. Но каждый раз исследуя улочки этого города, ловя улыбки корейцев на улице, находя и открывая для себя новых людей и новые места, я начала любить этот город все больше и больше, а потом мне стало так уютно здесь, что я совсем не хотела отсюда уезжать. Вот правда, я совсем не хотела уезжать!
Мне будет не хватать добрых улыбок корейцев. Я никогда не встречала столько доброжелательных, милых, добрых и щедрых людей в таком количестве, как в Корее. На рынках всегда что-то докладывают, на заправках дарят какие-то мелочи, в кафе приносят еще один чай бесплатно или просто к основному меню с улыбкой просто так приносят мороженое. Я не знаю, всегда ли это так, но мне очень везло на людей и всегда было именно так!
Я точно могу сказать, что корейцы одеваются со вкусом, очень стильно! Для меня Южная Корея и мода - это два слова, которые стоят рядом на одной строчке. Интересно было наблюдать за местными парочками. Кто следит за мной в snapchat (я там как и везде oljaryz) может быть заметили, что частенько я фотографировала парочек в одинаковой одежде. Очень мило наблюдать, когда девочка и мальчик взявшись за руки гуляют по городу в одинаковых ботинках, одинакового цвета свитерах или в одинаковых футболках и даже куртках. В этот момент чувствуешь себя как в каком-то корейском кино и просто идешь с улыбкой на лице наблюдая за ними.
Сеул - город пластической хирургии. Где бы вы ни находились (особенно в районе Gangnam), в метро или на улице, вы обязательно увидите не один плакат, призывающий к коррекции лица, носа, фигуры и т.п. Операция по корректировке формы глаз - одна из самых популярных в Южной Корее. Так что, если вдруг на улице встретите девушку с синяками под глазами и опухшим лицом, то это не потому, что ее кто-то обидел (Корея, кстати, считается одной из самых безопасных стран мира), а потому что здесь это совсем нормально, встретить людей на улице или в магазине после операции с заклеенным носом и еще опухшим лицом. Beauty shops и магазины косметики просто на каждом углу, такого количества я еще нигде не встречала!
Корея - это страна мяса и уличной еды. Для любителей вкусно покушать здесь просто рай, но вегетарианцам, а тем более веганам тут будет непросто. Найти здесь обычный простой зеленый салат в ресторане или кафе почти нереально, так же как и найти обычное вегетарианское меню. Не удивительно, ведь цены на фрукты и овощи здесь очень высокие. Это точно не Таиланд или Вьетнам, где можно всегда найти дешевые, свежие и вкусные фрукты и овощи. В Корее это действительно люкс.
В Сеуле почти невозможно найти мусорные баки на улицах (я ходила с выносной чашкой чая по городу думая вот-вот увижу мусорный бак по дороге, но в итоге приносила ее домой), но при этом в городе везде, даже на каждой остановке метро есть чистый туалет.
Мне повезло, что я застала в лето, осень и зиму в Сеуле. Если лето не самое лучшее время для посещения Кореи из-за дождей и высокой влажной температуры, то в осень и зиму в этом городе я просто влюбилась. Темнеет не раньше 5 вечера, солнце светит чаще, чем идет дождь, и на улице по-летнему тепло почти до начала ноября. Такой погоды, а именно дневного света, мне очень не хватает в осенне-зимний период в Берлине, где в это время года темно почти целый день.
Я могу рассказывать еще очень много, но все основное, чем хотела поделиться, вроде написала. Кстати, я уже делала несколько постов из Кореи, пока не было учебы и было много свободного времени: про просто волшебный ботанический сад в Сеуле, про выставку Plateu, про музей современного искусства и остров Muuido. Еще я редко делюсь подробностями и адресами интересных мест, или как туда добраться, но если интересуют вкусные веганские кафешки в этом городе, да и любые общие вопросы о Сеуле, просто спрашивайте в комментариях ниже, а я постараюсь все подробно рассказать и описать.
Каждый город прекрасен по-своему, и пока я буду скучать по Сеулу, хочу поделиться с вами атмосферой этого контрастного города, его красивых закатов сделанными мной во время бесконечных прогулок!
